January Bingo News

Hard work, persistence and some timely advertizing seems to be paying off as
we strive to move our Bingo Program into a region of reasonable profit. The
lesson from our first six months of having Bingo back in our hall is that it was
not as easy as we thought it would be. Now is not the time to slack off. I ask a
renewed effort from all Knights. Too many of our most dedicated Bingo workers
are the old timers who seem to have been doing this service forever. If our
young membership does not carry on the tradition of Knights like Cecil
Stockdill, Bill Merkel, Fred Smith, Jim Kasal, John Glanz, Sy Maier, Dick
Hecker, Jay Schippers, and Chuck Hehn, our future fund raising potential will be
in doubt. Every new 1st Degree Knight should be recruited to one of our eight
Bingo teams. Our Council leadership must lead the way and show by their example
the vital importance of a successful Bingo Program to the financial stability of
Council 1214. As John Glanz so aptly stated recently—a successful bingo program
is the price we pay for the ownership of our own hall. But beyond that it is the
source of most of our charitable fund-raising. The next six months will be a
make or break period for the program. Our future success rests clearly in our
own hands. May God bless our efforts.

-Carl Przekurat, Bingo Director

Breakfast at the Mission

In December Council 1214 began a new ministry at Catholic Charities Northern
Mission. Each Sunday from 8 to 10 AM one Knight will help in the hospitality
kitchen with breakfast preparation, serving and cleanup. The Mission is located
just North of Old Town Fort Collins on Linden Street. This is a great community
service and outreach opportunity for the council and volunteers can expect to be
fully utilized. According to Brother Knight Dan Schroeder, the first knight to
volunteer, wearing a short-sleeved shirt is a good idea since the kitchen is
warm and “standing around with nothing to do” doesn't happen. Thanks go out to
Dan and other knights who have volunteered already. Others who are interested in
helping should contact Brother Knight Jon Fairchild at 227-6770.

Columbus Club Update

Our Hall Work Day on 22 November was a great success. We had three projects
scheduled and all were completed. Landscaping at the front of the Hall was
upgraded with shrubs trimmed and mulch weeded and renewed thanks to Brother
Knight Clint Lucas, who provided supervision, materials and tools. He was ably
assisted by our own Boy Scouts and their leaders. Inside, the kitchen received a
thorough clean-up of our ovens and storage cabinets. In the basement heating and
air conditioning vents were sealed to further upgrade our energy efficiency.
Thanks to our fellow Knights Ed Powers, E. J. Reed, Dan O’Brien, Dave Pinedo,
Michael Roberts, Glen Geilenkirchen, Clint Lucas, Duane Rothers, and Bob Wood
for their participation. Look for our next Hall Work Day on the calendar in the
Mar/Apr Newsletter.

Your Knights of Columbus Insurance Representative is Brother Steve Huard.
Contact him at 970-231-0257 for your estate planning and life insurance needs.
Steve’s email address is Steven.Huard@kofc.org. Get free advice without any
pressure to buy.

The news on our economy seems to go from bad to worse as the current
recession deepens. The average American is concerned about protecting his
family’s future. Where can he turn? For members of the Knights of Columbus we
suggest a conversation with your professionally trained KofC insurance agent
about ways to protect yourself and your family. You may be thinking that you
cannot afford to be spending money right now but you must think about saving
money when times are hard, even if just a little bit. Saving money with
permanent life insurance which has guaranteed cash values or through a
retirement plan which pays guaranteed interest rates is a smart way to give your
family protection. Both of these products can give you a guaranteed income for
life. Let me help you plot the future of your family finances. Give me a call at
my number above.

Reconciliation

In this Christmas season, as we celebrate the gift of Jesus by our Almighty Father, may we honor this gift through reconciliation. We frequently recite the Lord’s Prayer with the words “forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us” but do we practice this? We ask the Lord for forgiveness pledging our own forgiveness to others, but do we really keep our end of the bargain? All Knights pledge to practice charity. Can there be real charity without forgiveness? Give the gift of forgiveness for Christmas. Reconcile with fellow Knights and others in our community. It is easy to forgive small annoyances, harder but more rewarding to forgive those with whom we have deep grievances. This is a triple play. We keep our promise “forgive those who trespass against us”, we feel better having restored harmony in part of our life, and we’ve given a priceless gift, forgiveness, to someone. As Knights we pledge to practice charity, unity, and fraternity—forgiveness plays a part in each. Let us fulfill our Catholic obligation for reconciliation at least once each year. Have a holy and forgiving Christmas season.

Knights Continue Tootsie Roll Tradition

On Saturday, October 11, and Sunday, October 12, Knights of Columbus Council 1214 will continue the decades-old tradition of the Tootsie Roll drive to benefit the intellectually disabled. The drive takes place at Fort Collins grocery stores. On the following weekend, the drive will continue after Masses at St. Joseph Catholic Church.

This tradition dates back to 1970, when three Knights with intellectually disabled daughters distributed Tootsie Rolls a means of raising awareness of the needs of the intellectually disabled in their own city of Chicago, Illinois.

The Knights of Council 1214 do not ask for donations during the Tootsie Roll event. They ask only that in this simple act of exchanging a piece of candy, the citizens of Fort Collins reflect on the lives of some of God’s special children. But the Knights do accept donations, and 100% of proceeds are donated to Foothills Gateway in our own community.
